Unregulated Development

The term unregulated development refers to any construction work that impacts or alters the physical landscape, which has either been undertaken in the absence of the necessary permits and approvals under the law, or which gained those permits and approvals in an improper manner.

A cornerstone of our work is fighting unregulated development both in the courts and in the media. We have taken on more than a dozen large-scale tourism or industrial projects that had engaged in some form of unregulated development. We and our community partners have championed six of these cases in court, resulting in two illegal operations being shut down completely. Others were persuaded to cease their illegal activities and live up to their responsibilities moving forward.

The Bahamas is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Sadly, its chain of 700 islands is littered with the wreckage of failed developments that were undertaken improperly and then abandoned. New unscrupulous developers continue to arrive in the country to try and make a quick buck by flouting the rules. As long as unregulated development remains a threat to our precious ecology and way of life, Save The Bays will continue the fight!
