Marine Protected Areas
There are several Marine Protected Areas in the Bahamas, which are managed by a the public-private partnership, the Bahamas National Trust. Unfortunately, several ecologically significant areas remain unprotected. These include the marine habitat off of North Bimini, which is key fish and shark nursery and endangered mangrove habitat, and the turtle habitats of Clifton Bay, frequented by endangered Green Turtles, as well as the critically endangered Hawksbill species, among others.
Save The Bays continues to advocate for the extension of the Marine Protected Area system to cover these crucial habitats, among others.
